Sydney, Australia – 25 May 2026 – Oz Medicann Group (OMG) today announced the signing of an exclusive global intellectual property licence agreement with Macquarie University focused on the development and commercialisation of innovative natural medicine therapies targeting persistent and systemic fungal infections.
The agreement represents another significant step in OMG’s strategy of building a clinical-stage life sciences company focused on developing evidence-based natural medicines for major unmet healthcare needs.
Under the collaboration, OMG has secured exclusive worldwide rights to develop, clinically validate, manufacture, and commercialise products arising from the licensed intellectual property. The program is expected to include formulation development, regulatory pathways, and future clinical studies targeting both topical and systemic fungal applications.
The licensed technology relates to naturally derived compounds and formulations with antifungal activity, specifically targeting persistent fungal infections and broader systemic fungal conditions.
Persistent fungal infections remain a significant and growing healthcare burden globally, particularly amongst immunocompromised patients and those suffering from chronic or recurrent conditions. Existing antifungal therapies continue to face limitations including resistance, poor tolerability, prolonged treatment duration, and inconsistent patient outcomes.
“This collaboration reflects the future direction of healthcare, where advanced natural medicines, rigorous clinical validation, and technology-driven delivery models come together to address major unmet medical needs,” said
Rohit Bhuta, Group CEO of OMG.
“Persistent and systemic fungal infections remain an under-recognised but significant global health issue. We believe there is a need to develop safer, more effective and more accessible therapies through scientifically validated natural medicine approaches.”
As part of the broader commercialisation strategy, OMG will work closely with international partner
NeoCannBio, supporting future clinical programs, regulatory pathways, manufacturing strategy, and distribution across key Asia-Pacific markets (excluding China and India). The partnership forms part of OMG’s broader international growth strategy focused on scaling evidence-based natural medicines into regulated healthcare markets globally.
Chairman of OMG, John Leith, said the agreement highlights the increasing maturity of the natural medicine sector and the importance of strong academic partnerships.
“The future of medicine will increasingly be driven by evidence, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration,” Mr Leith said.
“Our objective is not simply to develop products, but to build clinically validated therapies capable of progressing through regulatory pathways and ultimately integrating into mainstream healthcare systems globally.”
Professor Amy K. Cain, ARC Future Fellow from the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University, said the collaboration highlights the growing importance of translational research partnerships in addressing emerging healthcare challenges.
“Persistent fungal infections continue to represent a major and evolving clinical challenge globally, particularly with increasing antimicrobial resistance and limitations in existing therapies,” Professor Cain said.
“This collaboration creates an exciting opportunity to further explore the therapeutic potential of naturally derived compounds and support the translation of scientific research into clinically meaningful healthcare outcomes.”
Macquarie University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Enterprise), Professor Dan Johnson, said the collaboration demonstrates the importance of connecting research innovation with clinical and commercial development pathways.
“Macquarie University is committed to partnering with industry to translate promising scientific discoveries into meaningful healthcare solutions,” Professor Johnson said.
“We are pleased to be working with OMG to explore the therapeutic potential of this technology and support its progression toward clinical and commercial development.”
Macquarie University is recognised internationally for its translational research capabilities and strong focus on industry collaboration across biotechnology, health, and life sciences.
OMG expects the program to contribute to its broader pipeline of next-generation natural medicines and further strengthen its position at the intersection of therapeutics, clinical science, and AI-enabled healthcare platforms.
OMG believes the future of healthcare will increasingly be driven through collaboration between industry, academia, technology platforms, and clinical networks. The company continues to explore opportunities to partner with organisations globally that share its focus on evidence-based innovation and scalable healthcare outcomes.
